I’ve been fortunate to spend most of my career covering and working for local government. As a recent graduate with a degree in Outdoor Education and a naive desire to be a reporter, I managed to con my way onto Western North Carolina’s heritage radio station (NewsRadio 570 WWNC) as a news anchor and reporter. I was lucky to be mentored by news directors from major markets who taught me about the philosophy and intentionality of newswriting. And I’ve been hooked ever since.

After leaving broadcast journalism, I worked at the alt-weekly Mountain Xpress. My investigative reporting broke the story of and detailed corruption by the county manager at the time. I enjoyed covering current events while also taking the time to write in-depth pieces on important issues such as the opioid epidemic, access to early childhood education, veterans living with PTSD, ballot access reform, and more.

My most recent stint was working for eight years as a communications specialist for Buncombe County. I’m honored to have been a key member of months-long Emergency Operations Centers during COVID-19 and in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene when our team worked on critical messaging to the public. I also had the privilege and joy of ghostwriting for County Manager Avril Pinder and produced countless messages via newspaper op-eds, public speeches, internal messaging, letters, and more.

Along the way, I earned my Master of Public Administration, performed stand-up comedy, and spent more than a decade working on creative writing. These side stories merge into the main narrative by infusing a mix of expertise and humor that punches up my writing while keeping it distinctly human.
